I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
reviewed by Mrs. McLean
As an eighth grader my favorite book was I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. The book tells the story of Angelou’s life from birth to age sixteen. I found that I could really relate to the character. She was a small town girl like me, whose family and religion was very important to her. Angelou spoke of how she was taught about the importance of education and how she excelled in the face of racism and “Jim Crow” laws in the south.
